Arthur Hahner

(04/11/2017)

It is with great sadness that the family of Paramus resident Arthur T. Hahner announces his passing on April 11, 2017 at age 84. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Louise Casertano Hahner and his daughters, Patricia and her husband Richard Ortlieb, Dianne Stull, and Nancy and her husband Jack O'Shaughnessy. He is also survived by seven grandchildren, Eric Ortlieb, with whom he shared a special bond, and Eric's sisters, Maggie and Annie Ortlieb, Kara Stull Truong and her husband Thinh, Ryan Stull, and John and Robert O'Shaughnessy. He was also blessed to have three great-grandchildren Lucas, Rosie and Liem Truong. He is also survived by his dear sister-in-law, Anna Casertano Olivieri, and son-in-law Ron Stull. He also enjoyed a large family of many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was friend to many including Sylvester and Joyce Larena and especially blessed to still have his childhood friends Maurice McNamara, Al Golden and Ed Davin. Two special childhood friends, predeceased him, Tom Lyons and Jim Woods.

Arthur was born in Jersey City on April 8, 1933 to parents Charles and Josephine Bologna Hahner. He attended Dickinson High School where he was co-captain of the football team along with Ralph Rosato. He proudly served in the United States Army Signal Corps. Although he had only played high school football, he had the distinct privilege of playing football on the Fort Monmouth team along with many college athletes and NFL players who were drafted at that time. After his Army discharge he furthered his education at NJIT and Fairleigh Dickinson University studying electrical engineering and business management. He had a successful and gratifying career at ITT, Clifton location, primarily working on projects related to the defense of our country. His particular contribution was to the B52 bomber. Arthur retired in 1993 as Director of Strategic Systems Engineering.

When Arthur was 21 and a soldier, he met and fell in love with Louise Casertano, an 18-year-old college student. They were married in August of 1956 and were blessed with three darling daughters, Patty, Dianne and Nancy. They moved from their lovely Jersey City home to Paramus in 1969 where they raised their children and lived a good life. Arthur was a shining example of a good man, loving God, country and family. He was a good-hearted soul, always helpful and always respectful and reliable. He was a jack of all trades, and he mastered them all. He revered the police, our veterans and all servicemen. He loved the Jersey shore, especially The Beach House. He also loved his home, old songs, babies, driving, but most of all he loved Louise.

Arthur is predeceased by his parents, Charles and Josephine Hahner, his brothers Fred and wife Mary, Charles and wife Mary, sisters Josephine and husband Carl, June and husband Benny, and Frances who died in childhood. He is also predeceased by Louise's parents Percy and Clementina Paparazzo Casertano, and wonderful brother-in-law Dr. Vincent P. Olivieri.

Special thanks to Dr. Herman Morchell, a dear friend whose medical advice counseled and comforted our family and to Dr. Robert Kavaler who worked very hard, not only to heal the body but to soothe the soul as well.

Art was a regular guy, loving life and working hard, trying always to do a good job. He was a good and decent man and to his family he was "One in a Million."

Family will receive friends on Monday April 17, 2017 from 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm & 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm at the Vander Plaat Memorial Home 113 South Farview Avenue, Paramus. I happened to graduate from DHS about a year before Arthur..I remembered his football talents and thought that he was a very neat fellow beyond that..he seemed to have lead a very fine life...I did try to recruit two fellow DHS grads to join me on the trip to Paramus but I failed. You have my sympathy and prayers

A poem for Artie is easy to do Because he was loved by everyone he knew He worked hard for his children and wife But always hurried home at the end of the night Paramus was home but Point Pleasant was fun Everyone enjoyed the ocean and sun Many a summer was had by all The girls, their families ,grandkids all had a ball Now it's time for looking back At all the memories I know you kept track I'll remember Artie as a wonderful man But now he's at peace in a far away land Here on Earth we'll miss his warm smiling face But I know he has gone to a much better place. God Bless Artie Hahner

I worked as young engineer fresh out of school for Art. He was tough and expected the best at all times. When a young grows up, if he’s lucky and listening, God will bring to his life many fathers to guide and prepare him for what’s ahead. For me Art was just such a “dad”. Under him I learned the business of my trade and along the way we became friends. My deepest sympathies to Louise and Family, I know I will really miss him too and never forget what he did for me.
